Drew was 7th at the GBR Optimist GBR Team Selection Trials which consisted of eighty invited boats competing in twelve races held at Weymouth over four days of the bank holiday. He has been selected for the GBR European Team and he will compete for GBR European Championships in Crotone, Italy, in July of this year. He started the regatta well with a 5th, 3rd and 2nd, but had to work hard and be very tactical for places thereafter due to lighter winds as he now weighs 63 kg, compared to the ideal weight of 45 kg. As you can see in the photo, he's too big for an Opi.
He is already started sailing a 420 and has just gained sponsorship from Pinn and Bax in the new boat.
The Continuing Adventures of: Drew Wright
14 October 2016:
Drew who is still a junior member of Chelmarsh Sailing Club has won the RS Aero 7 National Inland Championships. This premier event was held 15 October at the Club with competitors travelling from all over the UK. Adam Rowlatt, also a junior member at Chelmarsh was 4th.
This former Optimist Inland National Champion and GBR Junior Sailing Team Member said “It's fantastic that such a high profile sailing event with fierce competition is being held in Shropshire. Chelmarsh Sailing Club have worked really hard to bring this event here for the second year running and have done an amazing job of securing grants to help young people like me to get to the top of sailing as a sport. The club loaned me one of their lottery funded boats and Mr Thursfield who teaches at Oldbury Wells in Bridgnorth coached me. I’m really pleased to have done justice to all of their efforts and to win this national event held at my local club. It helps to put Shropshire on the map”
